Segmentation

Cut every metric by the customers who actually matter

A single company-wide churn rate is an average of several different businesses. Segmentation is how you find out which one is the problem.

What is Segmentation?

Segmentation in Bastle lets you stack filters across plan, MRR and LTV bands, tenure, signup date, status, geography, enrichment data and your own imported attributes, then save the result as a named segment that works across every metric, chart and cohort table. Blended metrics hide the interesting part of a business; segments are how you get it back.

Filter

Stack conditions until the question is exact

Combine as many conditions as the question needs — annual plans over a certain MRR that signed up before a given date and are not delinquent — using string, numeric, date and boolean operators. The result is a live customer list you can read, export or turn into a segment.

  • Filter on plan, MRR, LTV, tenure, signup date, active, cancelled or delinquent status
  • Enrichment fields including industry, company size, city and country
  • Any custom attribute you have imported, alongside the built-in fields

Save

Define it once, use it everywhere

A saved segment is not a customer list that goes stale — it is a definition that re-evaluates whenever you look at it. Apply one to any metric and the whole page recalculates against it: MRR, churn, LTV, ARPU, cohort retention, forecasts. Ask respects saved segments too, so you can ask a question about one by name.

  • Segments apply across metrics, cohorts, forecasts and the assistant
  • Definitions re-evaluate continuously, so membership stays current
  • Shared across the workspace, so the whole team uses the same definition

Compare

Put segments next to each other

The comparison is where the insight lives. Overlay several segments on the same chart to see which one is carrying growth and which is quietly leaking, and compare cohort retention between them to find out whether a difference is real or just a different mix of signup months.

  • Multiple segments on one chart, over any date range
  • Cohort retention compared segment by segment
  • Per-segment MRR movement breakouts, so differences resolve to a cause

Why did MRR drop last month?

MRR fell $4,180 (−3.1%) in March. Almost all of it is contraction, not cancellations: 31 Scale customers downgraded to Growth after the annual renewal window opened.

Extend

Bring your own data in

The most useful segments usually depend on something your billing system does not know — sales rep, onboarding path, support ticket volume, NPS band, account tier. Define custom attribute fields and set values by customer or by email, from a CSV import or over the API, and they behave exactly like native fields.

  • Custom attribute fields defined per workspace, typed and reusable
  • Set values by customer identifier or by email, across billing sources
  • Import by CSV or API; enrichment fills in firmographic data automatically

Capabilities

What Segmentation includes

All of it sits in the same workspace. Bastle is free while in beta, so nothing on this list is an add-on, an upgrade or a separate subscription.

Segment-aware everywhere

A segment set on one screen carries through to the metrics, cohorts and assistant rather than resetting when you navigate.

Query them over the API

Segments are CRUD resources with an ad-hoc search endpoint, so an internal tool can resolve a segment to a customer list on demand.

Cross-source identity

Attributes can be keyed by email as well as by billing identifier, which is how a customer with two billing records becomes one customer.

Geographic view

Any segment can be plotted on a map, which is the quickest way to spot a regional churn pattern nobody had thought to look for.

Related

Where this connects

Segmentation reads the same normalised billing history as the rest of Bastle, so a change in one place shows up in the others without an export.

Keep going: see everything Bastle does, look up the maths behind any number in the metric glossary, or run a figure through the free calculators.

Practical questions are usually answered by the connector list, an honest comparison with the alternatives, or the same product framed for founders and for finance teams.

Frequently asked questions

What can I segment on?

Built-in fields cover plan, current MRR, LTV, signup date, tenure, and active, cancelled or delinquent status, plus billing source and payment provider. Enrichment adds firmographic fields such as industry, company size and location. On top of that, any custom attribute you define and populate yourself behaves like a native field, so segmentation extends to whatever your business considers meaningful.

Do saved segments update automatically?

Yes. A segment is a stored definition, not a frozen list of customers, so it re-evaluates whenever it is used. A customer who crosses your MRR threshold this week joins the segment this week, and every metric filtered by it reflects that without anyone refreshing anything.

Which metrics can be segmented?

The subscription metrics — MRR, ARR, ARPU, LTV, churn in all its forms, customer counts, movements and cohort retention — all support segmentation, as do forecasts. Cash-basis net revenue is the exception, because a charge belongs to a payment rather than to a subscription and so cannot be cleanly attributed to a segment of subscribers.

How many segments can I compare at once?

Enough that legibility becomes the limit before the software does. Comparing three or four segments on one chart is usually where the insight is; beyond that the lines start to overlap and a table becomes the better tool. There is no plan-based cap on how many segments you can create or save.

How do I get my own data in?

Define the attribute field first, then set values either by CSV import or through the attributes endpoint on the API. Values can be keyed by billing identifier or by email address, which means an attribute set once applies to a customer even if they appear in more than one billing source.
